Children of George and Mary Jane Upton May

According to my research, George May married Mary Jane Upton on February 18, 1825, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They had eight children in 21 years.

When James A. Sanders May was born on September 15, 1825, in Tennessee, his father, George, was 27 and his mother, Mary, was 19. Family records give the date of his birth  but I have no official documentation.

James is mentioned in Jim W. Kuhlman’s book, The History of the Nance Hereford Ranch. He writes, “James Sanders May was born in Tennessee on September 15, 1825, and died on April 7, 1851 in New Mexico on his way to California to find gold most likely, or he could have been involved in a cattle drive.” (p. 31)

When Malinda Josephine May was born on February 19, 1833, in Texas, her father, George, was 34, and her mother, Mary, was 26. She married John H. Fisher on January 4, 1852, in Lavaca, Texas. At this time, no information for her date of death or burial location has been found.

When Sam Houston May was born on April 30, 1835, in Texas, his father, George, was 36 and his mother, Mary, was 29. The only information I have found for Sam was on the 1850 United States Federal Census, Lavaca County, Texas. He is listed with his parents and siblings and his age was 12 years.

When Isaac Upton May was born on January 11, 1838, in Texas, his father, George, was 39 and his mother, Mary, was 31. In his book, The History of the Nance Hereford Ranch, Jim W. Kuhlman writes, “Living less that a year was Isaac Upton May, born on January 11, 1838, and died on January 3, 1839 in Marshall, Texas. It would appear with that name, although it has not been proven, he was named for his grandfather, the U.S. Army Officer in Tennessee who took his daughter Mary Jane Upton from her Cherokee Indian mother to be educated by members of this family.” (p. 32)

When John F. May was born on October 25, 1839, in Texas, his father, George, was 41 and his mother, Mary, was 33. He married Mary Jane Woodward Smith on September 3, 1863 in Lavaca County, Texas. They had one son and two daughters between 1865 and 1869. Mary Jane also had one son from her previous marriage to Lewis Smith. To view information about his children, click on the following link. John died on January 5, 1896, in Lavaca, Texas, at the age of 56 and was buried in the City Cemetery, Hallettsville, Lavaca, Texas. His grave is marked with a Civil War Veteran inscription – “2 LIEUT JOHN F MAY, CO D 2 TX CAV, CSA.” His wife, Mary Jane, was buried in the Kenedy Cemetery, Karnes County, Texas.

Children of Early Jackson and Wincy Titsworth Calk

Early Jackson “Jack” Calk married Louisa S. Champion on April 11, 1867. They had no children. Undocumented information says she died in 1872. He then married Wincy Louisa Titsworth on June 20, 1880, in Castroville, Medina, Texas. Evidently, Wincy was previously married and had a son named Levi Carlyle (Carlisle)Titsworth. It is also possible he was born out of wedlock. I found Wincy and Levi Titsworth on the 1880 United States Federal Census in Atascosa County, Texas, living with the John L. McCaleb family. The record states the relationship as “cousins.” This census was taken shortly before Early and Wincy married. Evidently, Early adopted Levi because he later uses the name of “Calk.” Following their marriage, they had six more children.

Levi Carlyle Calk was born on January 29, 1875, in Bonham, Fannin, Texas. He married Martha “Mattie” Dell Davis on December 26, 1897. They had six children in 12 years. To view information about his children, click on the following link. Family Group Sheet for Levi Carlisle Calk
